She is .. beautiful, highly educated, and extremely motivated while motivating women across Hotlanta! She is.. Lakara Foster. A list of Lakara's many job titles includes a successful radio personality, producer, motivational speaker, and spoken word artist. Lakara tells treazuremag.com about her various roles, uplifting women and the LGBT Community.
Where are you from?
I am originally from New Orleans, La. But I currently reside in Atlanta, Ga.
What is your educational background?
I have a BS in Psychology, a BS in Criminal Justice, and a Masters in Counseling.
How important is having a solid education?
I think education provides unparalleled freedom.
Tell us about "She Speaks".
"She Speaks" is a company I started a year and a half ago. It encompasses all of who I am as a radio personality, spoken word artist, and motivational speaker. The slogan for my company is "I love the she in me" and it is my mission to empower all women to love and honor themselves and to develop their own voice.
What are some of the key topics of discussion?
Spirituality and learning to listen and seek guidance from our inner voice. Also taking responsibility for our education, finances, sexual health, and relationships.
What do your workshops consist of?
The workshop is titled Things fall apart: Putting the pieces of lives back together. It is divided into three sessions comprised of dialogue, break-out sessions, and hands on activities that will allow for reflection, assessment, preparation, and action. Best of all, It is conducted in an atmosphere that is conducive to learning and healing.
Who have been a positive influence in your life?
All of my family and friends who love and support me unconditionally...and of course Oprah!!!
What are some other projects that you are working on?
I am the host and producer of one of Atlanta's hottest spoken word venues called The Brown Sugar Vibe. Every month we feature the best spoken word and live music artists from around the country. Our stage has been graced by legendary performers such as Abyss, Queen Sheba, Nfared, Theresa Davis, Chaz, and Ken J Martin, just to name a few. On Sunday August 31, 2008 at Sugarhill in Atlanta's Underground, I am producing one of my biggest shows to date, which will feature Maria Howell from everybody's favorite movie "The Color Purple". I also host a monthly radio show called She Speaks! (inside Alternative Perspectives) on WRFG 89.3 FM where we openly discuss a multitude of women's issues.
What is your vision for the LGBT community?
My vision for the LGBT Community is that more of us will continue to live our lives out and proud and that one day there will not be a dilineation between the LGBT community and the community at large.
